Plot summary

Gerald MacTeam calls off his engagement to Kitty Murray after he learns his uncle has died. He inherits a castle in the Scottish highlands and settles there with the castle servants. Kitty will not accept the broken engagement, so she and her aunt, Edith Murray, follow him. At the castle the two women find that Gerald has aged suddenly and that his manner has changed. Strange events occur in the house and in the hedge maze beside it.
