Plot summary
Captain Invincible fought crime through Prohibition, the Depression and World War II, and Americans hailed him as a hero. In 1953 a congressional investigation turned on him with McCarthy-style persecution: it called him a communist, pointing to his red cape and his premature anti-fascism, and its charges were that he had flown without a license, pretended to be a military officer and appeared in public in his underwear. He left the United States for Australia and became a hopeless alcoholic. Thirty years afterward his old enemy Mr. Midnight comes back with a stolen hypno-ray, a secret government weapon, and the US government asks its former champion to return. Sydney police detective Patty Patria helps track him down. To work again he must remember how to fly, govern magnetic powers that have gone wrong, and stay sober.

- After the film was finished, producer Andrew Gaty recut it on the advice of his American distributor; director Philippe Mora objected, and Australia's Minister of Home Affairs, Tom McVeigh, ruled the film was not "Australian", costing investors a 150% tax deduction. Gaty sued over that ruling and won.
