Juanita Moore
Biography
Juanita Moore was an American actress of film, television, and stage, born in Greenwood, Mississippi and raised in Los Angeles after her family joined the Great Migration. She began as a dancer in a chorus line at the Cotton Club, then worked as a film extra while performing in theater, making her screen debut in Double Deal in 1939 and taking bit parts and supporting roles for two decades. Her most famous role was Annie Johnson, the housekeeper whose daughter passes for white, in Imitation of Life (1959); the part brought nominations for the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for best supporting actress, and made her the fifth black actor nominated for an Oscar. She was vice president of the Original Cambridge Players, which brought The Amen Corner to Broadway in 1965, and appeared often on television, including as Essie on Wagon Train. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024.
