Plot summary
Jim Grayam is a systems analyst at Benson Industries, admired across the company for his intelligence. On a lonely highway he finds a car stopped on a railroad crossing, a woman unconscious inside with the doors locked, and he smashes a window, drives the car off the tracks just ahead of a speeding train, and takes her home. She is Lorrie Benson, wife of the Beverly Hills millionaire Cort Benson, and when she wakes she tells him she chose the tracks on purpose; he refuses a reward. The hard-drinking Lorrie draws him into a scavenger hunt and then into an affair. Once it becomes serious, Cort begins to ruin Grayam's standing at work, suggesting he is suffering a breakdown like one in his youth, and the psychoanalyst Dr. Elizabeth Larstadt is asked to examine him.
