Biography

Johnny Mack Brown was an American actor and college football player who became known for Westerns. Raised in Dothan, Alabama, he starred as a halfback at the University of Alabama, where he helped the 1925 team to a national title and earned Rose Bowl MVP honors. A 1927 screen test led to a five-year MGM contract, and he played Mary Pickford's love interest in Coquette (1929). He starred in Billy the Kid (1930) and appeared in The Secret Six (1931). After he was replaced on Laughing Sinners, he was rebilled as Johnny Mack Brown and turned to low-budget Westerns, eventually becoming a leading B-movie cowboy. He starred in more than 60 Westerns at Monogram Pictures from 1943, and he retired in 1952. He appeared in over 160 movies between 1927 and 1966. He earned a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960 and a posthumous Golden Boot Award in 2004.
