Plot summary
Edith Crawford brings District Attorney John Grant, her brother, a stack of unsigned letters that were kept in her husband's safe, and he tells her the story of Nora Moran. The Morans adopted Nora from a Catholic orphanage, and after her parents die in a car crash she looks for work as a chorus girl without success. Paulino, a lion tamer with a traveling circus, hires her as his assistant and rapes her. She leaves the circus for a nightclub in New York, where she meets Dick Crawford. He rents a house for her across the state line, and Grant, who is grooming Crawford for governor, investigates her.
