Plot summary
In 1905, Dinah Sheldon studies art at Miss Ingram's Seminary until the school expels her for too few petticoats, for going to political rallies and for asking to draw from nude models. Sent home to Baltimore, she is forgiven by her father, Dr. Andrew Sheldon, an Episcopalian pastor, though her mother Lily wants her to behave more like a conventional young woman. Tom Wade, her childhood sweetheart, also wishes she would settle down, and he tells her that he has begun seeing Bernice Eckert. Dinah pretends not to care and says she wants only to study art in Paris. Tom offers to help her get there. Meanwhile her father has become a candidate for a bishop's post, and his vestryman Dan Fletcher worries about the family's reputation.
