Plot summary
John "Kit" McKittrick held out for two years under torture in the Spanish Civil War, keeping from his captors, and from the unseen man with a limp who led them, the information they wanted. Louie Lepetino, the New York police lieutenant who arranged his escape, is dead, and Inspector Tobin calls it an accident. Kit, still mending in Arizona, comes back to the city and takes a room in the apartment of his friend Ab Parker. There he meets the guests who were present at the party where Louie fell: the Norwegian historian Dr. Christian Skaas, who uses a wheelchair, and his nephew Otto; Barby Taviton, Kit's old flame, who gave the party; the singer Whitney Parker and her accompanist Anton; and Toni Donne, who draws Kit to her. Dr. Skaas talks of modern torture, and Kit is shaken.
