Murray Kinnell
Biography
Murray Kinnell was a British-born American actor who often played polished, gentlemanly characters with a dishonest streak. His stage career began in 1907, and in the early 1910s he toured the United States before returning to England to serve with the British Army in World War I. He then moved to America, and his first screen role came in Old English, a George Arliss film. From 1930 to 1937 he acted in 71 movies. Among them were The Public Enemy (1931), where he was the petty crook Putty Nose, plus The Secret Six (1931), The Black Camel (1931), Grand Hotel (1932), A Successful Calamity (1932), The House of Rothschild (1934), Charlie Chan in London (1934), Charlie Chan in Paris (1935), and Think Fast, Mr. Moto (1937). He also held posts with the Screen Actors Guild and retired in 1952. He died in 1954.

Big break
Kinnell suggested to George Arliss that Bette Davis be cast in The Man Who Played God, a favor Davis said saved her from leaving Hollywood.
A first
In March 1925, Kinnell took on the role of leading man for an acting troupe for the first time, performing with the All-English stock company at Montreal's Orpheum.
A change of course
In 1939, SAG officials chose Kinnell to serve as the Guild's representative for arbitration hearings over contract disputes with the Motion Picture Producers (MPP).
