Plot summary
After the Civil War, Wild Bill Hickok leaves the Union Army and travels west. On a paddle steamer he meets his old scouting colleague Buffalo Bill Cody, who has brought his new wife Louisa. Their friend Calamity Jane drives the stagecoach that carries the party on to Hays City. John Lattimer, an agent for gun makers, has sold repeating rifles to the Cheyenne, and the weapons let the tribe kill half the troopers at a cavalry outpost. Hickok finds the rifles and takes the news to General George Armstrong Custer, who sends a wagon train of ammunition to the fort and has Cody lead the way. Hickok sets out to find Yellow Hand, the Cheyenne leader, and to learn what has turned the tribe to war.
