Plot summary
Mike McCall and his brother Tim run a large cattle ranch in an Arizona valley, where the dam their father built on the river keeps all the water in their hands. Stanton and Cox own the surrounding land, and they sell plots to settlers from Indiana and Illinois who arrive to find the soil bone dry. John Dawson and his daughter Connie are among them, and Connie takes the settlers' complaint to Sheriff Aaron Ball, who says the law gives him nothing to work with. Stanton, meanwhile, has his men rob the local bank and put the money back to gain a hold over its owner, T.J. Furman, as part of a plan against the McCalls. Some settlers, angry at the McCall monopoly on water, side with him.
