Plot summary
Sinbad's friend Abbu joins him in salvaging a ship whose crew has been poisoned. Aboard it lies a map showing the way to Alexander the Great's lost treasure, kept on the island of Deryabar. When Sinbad sails the ship into Basra, the khan confiscates it and puts it up for auction. Sinbad talks the other bidders out of buying it, until a veiled woman named Shireen, of the harem of the emir of Daibul, makes a bid of her own, and his counterbid leaves him owing a fortune. He takes the auctioneer's money to settle it. That night, in Shireen's garden, he hears of Jamal, a rival for the treasure whom nobody has seen.

- A strike at the Technicolor processing plant held up the color prints, so RKO pushed the film from Christmas 1946 to January 13, 1947, and gave its featured 1946 Christmas slot to Frank Capra's black-and-white It's a Wonderful Life instead.
- Douglas Fairbanks Jr. convinced RKO to engage a number of supporting actors and stuntmen who had worked with his father, the silent-film star Douglas Fairbanks.
- RKO signed Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in December 1945 to star as Sinbad; it was his first feature-film role after serving five years in the navy during World War II.
- Fairbanks announced that Sinbad the Sailor would be the last film in which he would appear for a set salary; his deal gave him an office with a secretary and input on the screenplay, sets and wardrobe.
