Plot summary
Seven Jones is a young Texas Ranger beginning his first assignment, following the path of his brother, Two Jones. He arrives in a town still angry at the Rangers after Jim Flood killed two men in a card-game shoot-out and burned the saloon. Reporting to headquarters, Jones meets Joy Karrington, the daughter of the woman who looks after the Rangers' meals, and starts to fall for her. Flood is known as a legendary gunslinger and something of a Western folk hero. Jones is soon sent with a more experienced Ranger, Sergeant Hennessey, to capture Flood and bring him to justice. Hennessey objects that such a mission is unusual for a new recruit, but the lieutenant insists.

- Seven Ways from Sundown was first directed by George Sherman, but during filming he and star Audie Murphy argued over a line reading and Murphy pushed him over and threatened to kill him. Sherman left the project, and Harry Keller finished the shoot in his place.
- While making Seven Ways from Sundown, Audie Murphy began an affair with his co-star Venetia Stevenson, and the relationship lasted a year.
