Plot summary

Sixteen years into a twenty-five-year sentence, John Wesley Hardin is pardoned and leaves the Huntsville, Texas prison in 1896. The manuscript he wrote behind bars goes to a local printer, and Hardin hopes the account of his life will be published and his reputation restored. The pages tell of his upbringing by his preacher father, J.G. Hardin, of his first love, Jane Brown, and of the gambling that gave him relief from a difficult home life. Hardin learns the ways of the outlaw when a card game turns violent and he shoots a man in self-defense. The man's brothers, Ike, Dirk and Ben Hanley, come gunning for him, and Hardin finds aid from Rosie McCoy, a saloon woman, and from his uncle John Clements.
