Plot summary
During the Great Depression, a dust storm sweeps across the Wagoneer farm in Oklahoma just as Red Stovall arrives in a convertible. Red, who is the brother of Whit's mother, is a country-western musician with an audition waiting at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. He is broke, drives badly, and is sick with tuberculosis. Whit, fourteen, sees a chance to escape a life of picking cotton. He begs his mother to let him accompany his uncle as a driver and protege. She agrees, and the two head out on the road toward Tennessee, with Red's health and prospects both uncertain.

- Country singer Marty Robbins, who plays the session guitarist Smokey, made his last film appearance here. He died one week before the picture reached cinemas.
SPOILER
Clint Eastwood's dying honky-tonk singer Red Stovall was drawn loosely from a real performer, the country pioneer Jimmie Rodgers, whose life the story follows at a distance.- The jail break was shot in Dayton, Nevada, against the Odeon Hall, the same brick building where Marilyn Monroe played paddleball and shot bar interiors for The Misfits in 1961. The movie jail was built onto it, and townspeople filled the crowd.
- Opening on 677 screens, the film took only $667,727, the worst opening weekend any Clint Eastwood picture had ever had, and its $4.5 million total was his lowest in more than a decade.
