Plot summary
Late in 1943 the amphibious attack transport USS Belinda is launched. Captain Jebediah S. Hawks, a regular Navy officer, commands the ship, and Lieutenant Dave MacDougall, an ex-merchant mariner, serves as boat commander. The two men have personal friction, and they are the only experienced officers aboard on the shakedown cruise, which leaves plenty to keep them busy. The crew's handling of the ship is almost laughable at first and improves only gradually. When the Belinda lands troops on enemy beachheads, the crew is still far from perfect, and the ship's war in the Pacific runs from 1943 into 1945.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Away All Boats (1956)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Navy, worried about declining recruitment numbers, gave Universal full cooperation on Away All Boats, including permission to photograph maneuvers and mock attacks in the Caribbean and on Vieques in March 1955, after it had disliked how From Here to Eternity and The Caine Mutiny portrayed the armed services.
- The first choice for the lead role in Away All Boats was Clark Gable; the part went to Jeff Chandler, and George Nader, who had twice taken roles Chandler refused, worked with him for the first time.
- Kenneth Dodson's 1953 novel, the basis for the film, drew on his own World War II service, and Carl Sandburg encouraged Dodson's writing after reading his letters from the Pacific.
- The film's kamikaze attack scene was later reused in the 1976 film Midway, even though no kamikaze attacks took place during that battle.
