Plot summary
Big Mama the owl, Dinky the sparrow and Boomer the woodpecker arrange for an orphaned red fox to be adopted by the farmer Widow Tweed, who names him Tod. Her neighbor Amos Slade brings home a hound puppy, Copper, and sets him to train beside his old hunting dog, Chief. Tod and Copper meet and pledge eternal friendship. When Copper keeps wandering off to play, Amos puts him on a leash. Tod accidentally wakes Chief, and Amos chases him until Tweed stops him.

- On Don Bluth's 42nd birthday, September 13, 1979, he, Gary Goldman and John Pomeroy turned in their resignations to Ron Miller; 13 more animators followed, the team asked not to be credited, and the film's release moved from Christmas 1980 to summer 1981.

Chief the hunting dog was slated to die as he does in the novel, but the scene was changed so that he only breaks a leg; animator Ron Clements protested that Copper would then lack motivation to hate Tod.- The Fox and the Hound was the first film for future directors Tim Burton, Brad Bird and John Lasseter, and the last to involve the remaining members of Disney's Nine Old Men, including Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston.
- Helen Hayes turned down the voice role of Widow Tweed, and Jeanette Nolan, the second choice for the part, was cast instead.
- Jackie Cooper auditioned for the adult Copper but left the film when he demanded more money than the studio would pay; Kurt Russell, then filming the Elvis television movie, won the role after a reading and finished his dialogue in two sessions.
- At the time of its release, The Fox and the Hound was the most expensive animated film produced to date, costing $12 million.
