The men of Whitman's Valley, California have no women to marry and are ready to leave. In 1851 their employer, Roy Whitman, travels to Chicago and enlists 140 women willing to make the crossing and wed there. Patience, a middle-aged widow, Rose Meyers, pregnant and unmarried, and the former showgirls Fifi Danon and Laurie Smith are among them. Each chooses a prospective husband from a collection of daguerreotypes. Whitman hires wagon master Buck Wyatt to lead the convoy to St. Joseph, Missouri, where Conestoga wagons and fifteen trail hands wait.
