Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising (2007)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Before release, the production ran into trouble: author Susan Cooper was unhappy with how her novel had been adapted, the film's title was changed repeatedly, and advance screenings for critics were canceled.
  • Director David Cunningham kept visual effects to only about 200 shots and instead relied on practical methods: a thousand real snakes shipped in from the Czech Republic were dumped on the actors, real water was used to flood a mansion set, and live birds were trained to fly at the cast.
  • Cinematographer Joel Ransom had a reconstruction of a 13th-century chapel built, a set that took four months to construct, so it could fully surround the actors and let him shoot 360-degree camera sweeps to depict the story's time-travel sequences.
  • Costume designer Vin Burnham wove small crystals into the outfits worn by Frances Conroy and Ian McShane so the costumes would visibly glisten on camera.
  • Analysts at Box Office Prophets questioned the wide 3,141-theater release because the cost of striking prints for that many screens actually exceeded what the film earned on its opening weekend.
  • The Seeker had the second-worst opening weekend ever for a film released in more than 3,000 theaters, trailing only Walden Media's own 2006 film Hoot.
