Plot summary
The celebrations for South Dakota's statehood bring past and present residents of Deadwood together in 1889. Alma Garret Ellsworth comes back to town with her ward Sofia, and Calamity Jane returns to reconcile with Joanie Stubbs, who now runs the Bella Union. George Hearst, now a United States senator, arrives to buy Charlie Utter's land, which stands in the way of the telephone lines he has invested in. Utter consults U.S. Marshal Seth Bullock about the offer, and Bullock warns him what Hearst does when he is refused. Hearst visits Al Swearengen, who is ailing from liver failure, and demands his help in getting the land.

- David Milch, who wrote the film, had his Alzheimer's diagnosis made public in April 2019 and took a hands-off approach to the production, relying on director Daniel Minahan and co-executive producer/writer Regina Corrado to see to the details.
- The mining town of Deadwood was recreated for the film by production designer Maria Caso, and the production filmed on the same sets used for Westworld.
- Titus Welliver, who played Silas Adams in the series, could not appear in the film because of scheduling conflicts while he was filming his Amazon Prime series Bosch.
- Powers Boothe, Ricky Jay and Ralph Richeson died between the end of the series and the film's production, and Boothe's small role in an early version of the script was written out.
