Plot summary
Bilal shares a home on the outskirts of a village with his mother and his younger sister Ghufaira, until Byzantine soldiers enslave the family and kill the mother. Sold as a boy to Umayyah, the richest man in Mecca, Bilal grows up serving the household of a Quraysh leader. In the city he meets Okba, who sells idols from his shop, and the masked Charlatan Priest, who promises people that the idols will grant their desires. When Umayyah's son Safwan threatens Ghufaira with an arrow, Bilal steps in and is whipped for it. He befriends a white horse and Saad, a skilled archer, and gives his own food to a hungry boy caught stealing from the idol's bowl. Abu Bakr, who believes in equality, watches, but Bilal cannot imagine a fair future for slaves.
