Plot summary
Lillith Sullivan is ten years old, her grades have fallen, and she has grown distant from her parents. The social worker on the case, Emily Jenkins, suspects the couple has abused and overprotected the girl since she was born. She proposes that the department take Lillith away from them. The parents try to kill their daughter by roasting her in the oven, and Emily saves her with Detective Mike Barron. Lillith asks Emily to look after her rather than move to a children's home, and with the board's agreement Emily takes her in until a foster family is found.
