Plot summary
Harry Lomart is a convicted murderer serving time, and he has accepted the length of his sentence because he believes his wife Pat will be there when he walks out. He and a fellow convict, Birdy Williams, have worked out an escape and a new life in another country, lying low once they are free. Then Pat comes to the prison, and what she tells him changes his mind about all of it. She has been seeing another man and is expecting a child. Lomart's plan to vanish gives way to a plan to track down Pat and the other man. Inspector Milton is put on the case.
