Plot summary
Terminal Island Penitentiary stages the Death Race, a three-day event in which inmates drive weaponized cars on a trap-filled track, with freedom for the winner; Warden Claire Hennessey profits from livestreaming it. Jensen Ames, an industrial worker and former racer whose mill is closing, comes home to a masked attacker; he wakes beside his dead wife Suzy with a bloodied knife in his hand and is arrested. Sentenced to life, he is transferred to Terminal Island six months later, where Hennessey offers him freedom in exchange for racing in Frankenstein's place.

- Long before Jason Statham took the wheel, Tom Cruise was set to play the lead. Roger Corman, producer of the 1975 original, had an option agreement with Cruise, who rejected the first two screenplays before a third was written.
- Frederick Koehler's character Lists is the only figure in the whole Death Race series to turn up in all four films with the same actor playing him, from this one through to Death Race: Beyond Anarchy in 2018.
