Plot summary
Charlie Cartwright conducts packaged bus tours of Europe for American visitors, eighteen days and nine countries at a time, and he uses the stops to look up women he knows in each city. He arrives late for the departure after oversleeping with one of them, and the group waiting to leave is impatient. Samantha Perkins has joined the tour to decide whether to marry her boyfriend, George, and she finds Charlie frivolous and conniving. Fred and Edna Ferguson have brought their daughter Shelly along in hopes of ending her involvement with a boyfriend they dislike. Jack Harmon wants to see again the ground he fought over in the war, John Marino hopes to meet Italian relatives he has never met, and Harry Dix collects souvenirs that do not belong to him.

- The title comes from a Leonard Dove cartoon in The New Yorker of 22 June 1957, in which a young woman beside a tour bus protests that if it is Tuesday it has to be Siena. A 1965 CBS documentary had already borrowed the line.
- The film's poster was staged on the Grote Markt in Antwerp, the cast posing in front of the city hall with their tour bus blocking the view of the Brabo fountain, even though private vehicles are banned from parking on the square.
