Biography

Dean Jones was an American actor who became a leading man for the Walt Disney Company during the 1970s. Born in Decatur, Alabama, he began as an MGM contract performer, playing a disc jockey in Jailhouse Rock (1957) and soldiers in Imitation General and Never So Few. After starring in the NBC sitcom Ensign O'Toole, he signed with Disney beginning with That Darn Cat! (1965). His Disney films included Blackbeard's Ghost (1968), The Love Bug, The Million Dollar Duck (1971), Snowball Express (1972), and Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977). For The Million Dollar Duck he earned a Golden Globe nomination. Later he played the evil veterinarian Dr. Herman Varnick in Beethoven (1992) and appeared in Other People's Money (1991) and Clear and Present Danger (1994). In 1995 he was named a Disney Legend. He made his Broadway debut in There Was a Little Girl and later recorded the original cast album of Stephen Sondheim's Company.

Jones first appeared on Broadway in the 1960 play There Was a Little Girl. He took over the part in Boston after being given just one day's notice.

Jones got his start at Disney after the studio ordered a print of his film Under the Yum Yum Tree to study, because his sitcom Ensign O'Toole was the lead-in to Walt Disney's The Wonderful World of Color.
