Plot summary
In Edgefield, Massachusetts, two bungling kidnappers break into the home of wealthy Mr. Flint to take his wife for ransom, and leave with his housemaid Lizzie instead. Patti Randall, a teenager at odds with her parents over how she dresses and behaves, lets her cat D.C. out each night to roam the neighborhood, where he teases dogs, steals food and plays with a birdcage. One night D.C. wanders into the hideout, and Lizzie straps her watch to him, with HELP scratched on it and the last letter unfinished. Patti reads the message, nobody believes her, so she changes the scratched letter. She travels to Boston and lays the case before FBI Agent Zeke Kelso, who believes her.
