Plot summary
Jim Douglas narrates the tale of Herbie, the Volkswagen Beetle. Herbie now belongs to Simon Moore III, an egotistical race driver and car dealer who mistreats the car; a mid-race insult makes Herbie rebel, and the pair finish last, after which Simon throws the Beetle into a junkyard. Hank Cooper, a former racing driver and once Moore's rival, earns his living as a mechanic in a small-town garage. His boss Chuck signs him up for a junk-car race in which drivers repair a jalopy and race it, and Hank, picking last, is left with the broken-down Herbie. Roddy, Hank's artist friend, helps him get the car started just before it is towed away, and Herbie goes on to take the one-lap race, which brings back Hank's belief in his own driving.
