Plot summary
Sent to Beverly Hills to cover a golf tournament, New York sportswriter Mike Hagen wins the reporters' betting pool, buys drinks, and wakes with no memory of the night. At the hotel pool he meets Marilla Brown, who helped him file his story, and within eight days they marry. On the flight home Mike learns she kept her job, her wealth and her family connections to herself, and the friction begins. He keeps to working-class friends and a poker club; she designs clothes for artistic personalities. When both groups gather at her apartment on a Wednesday night, the two worlds meet. Mike is also writing exposés of the boxing promoter Martin Daylor, and he hides the danger from his wife.
