Plot summary
Kelly Kapowski's grandfather Harry Bannister owns a small hotel in Hawaii called The Hideaway, and he invites Kelly and her friends to spend summer vacation there. Zack Morris, Kelly, A.C. Slater, Jessie Spano, Lisa Turtle and Screech come from Bayside High expecting the beach, and their principal, Mr. Belding, is already at the hotel. The group learns that a developer wants Harry's property, and they set out to help him keep The Hideaway. Zack also meets the love of his life again, and Jessie, Slater and Lisa make a bet about whether Jessie and Slater can get through the trip without fighting.

- Mark-Paul Gosselaar was cast as Zack Morris after casting director Shana Landsburg spotted the 14-year-old and was struck by his charisma; he was given the role after a quick read-through.
- Dustin Diamond was cast as Screech only because Mark-Paul Gosselaar insisted he was right for the part; Engel later discovered he had misread Diamond's head shot and that Diamond was much younger than the rest of the cast.
- Lark Voorhies was cast as Lisa Turtle even though the character had been conceived as a rich Jewish princess from Long Island, and the role was rewritten for her.
- Mario Lopez, a Latino dancer and drummer from Kids Incorporated, was cast as A.C. Slater after the character was opened up to other ethnicities when casting for an Italian-American type failed.
- Tiffani-Amber Thiessen won the role of Kelly Kapowski over Elizabeth Berkley and Jennie Garth after Peter Engel convinced producers following a read-through with Mario Lopez.
- Elizabeth Berkley lost the role of Karen on Good Morning, Miss Bliss because she was much taller than Mark-Paul Gosselaar, but was later offered the part of Jessie Spano on Saved by the Bell.
- The Saved by the Bell theme song was written by Scott Gayle in direct violation of Peter Engel's orders not to reference the show's title, and Engel admitted it was the best.
- Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style was mostly shot in Santa Monica due to budget constraints, with only essential location shots filmed in Hawaii; real lifeguards were hired as extras for beach scenes.
