Plot summary
Albert Dooley is a research scientist whose paycheck never stretches far enough for his wife Katie and their son Jimmy. Katie's applesauce, meant to save money on lunch, ends up in the lab, where the duck Albert has been testing eats it, wanders into a radiation room and comes out changed. Ordered to be rid of the bird, Albert hands it to Jimmy, who has been asking for a pet. The duck, named Charley, lays an egg when it hears a dog bark, and every yolk comes out solid gold. Albert, Katie and Albert's friend Fred sell the yolks, and the windfall draws the attention of Hooper, the Treasury bureaucrat next door, who keeps watch on the Dooleys.
