Plot summary
Champion race driver Jim Douglas comes out of retirement and enters Herbie, his sentient Volkswagen Beetle, in the Trans-France Race, a road event from Paris to Monte Carlo. His partner and mechanic Wheely Applegate rides with him. Their rivals include the German driver Bruno von Stickle, the French driver Claude Gilbert, and Diane Darcy, the only woman in the field, whose Lancia Scorpion, Giselle, is sentient as well. Herbie falls for Giselle, while Diane blames Jim for the damage Herbie did to her in the qualifying rounds.
