Biography

Mae Marsh was an American film actress who worked for more than fifty years, a silent-era star best known for her collaborations with D. W. Griffith. Born in Madrid, New Mexico Territory, she grew up in Texas and California and came into pictures as an extra, taking her first substantial part in Ramona (1910). At Biograph she played small roles for Griffith, and when Mary Pickford refused a part in Man's Genesis, Marsh stepped in and won the lead in The Sands of Dee. She appeared in The Birth of a Nation (1915) and in Intolerance (1916), where her performance as the Dear One drew praise. A Goldwyn contract followed, though those films did poorly. She returned to the screen in sound pictures with Over the Hill (1931) and moved into character roles, and John Ford cast her in several films, among them 3 Godfathers (1948) and The Searchers (1956). She received the George Eastman Award in 1955.
