Plot summary
Eric Stanton, a drifter with no money, is left behind in the town of Walton when the bus to San Francisco pulls out without him. He walks into Pop's Eats, where the owner is anxious about his waitress Stella, who has been gone for days; Mark Judd, once a New York policeman, tells him she will turn up, and she does. Stanton is drawn to her, but his flattery gets him nowhere, and she says plainly that she wants a husband who can buy her a home. He finds work with Professor Madley, a fortune teller who stages séances. To get to Clara Mills, the local spinster whose disapproval keeps the town from buying tickets to Madley's spook meeting, Stanton approaches her younger sister June and talks the two of them into coming.

- Zanuck edited Fallen Angel to bring out Linda Darnell's character at the expense of Alice Faye's role; Faye wrote an angry letter to Zanuck, left it on his desk, abandoned her new contract and did not return to films for sixteen years.
- Dana Andrews was asked by Darryl Zanuck and Otto Preminger to play Eric in Fallen Angel after his success in their Laura, but he called the script terrible and in bad taste and only accepted after Zanuck threatened him with suspension.
- Fallen Angel was adapted from a Marty Holland novel; the British Film Institute says the author was a woman called Mary who wrote two or three best-selling pulp novels and then vanished from the record in 1949.
- Alice Faye agreed to play June in Fallen Angel only on the conditions that she star with Dana Andrews and that she choose and sing the theme song; she picked "Slowly" by David Raksin.
