Plot summary
Ben Ragan's dog, Trouble, vanishes into the Okefenokee Swamp, and Ben's hunt for it brings him to Tom Keefer, who is living in the marsh as a fugitive, accused of killing Deputy Shep Collins. Neither trusts the other at first. Tom survives a snake bite, and afterward the two work the swamp together; Ben sells what they catch. Ben also meets Tom's daughter Julie, who lives in straitened circumstances, and helps her clean up and look more presentable; he falls in love with her. He wants Tom to return to town, and the townspeople grow suspicious of his trips into the swamp.
