Plot summary
In Tanganyika, a team of scientists works as Project Inner Space, drilling a deep hole toward the planet's core for its geothermal energy. The drill cannot pass an extremely dense layer of material. To get through it, the project's leader, Dr. Stephen Sorenson, wants to lower an atomic device to the bottom of the hole and set it off. Dr. Ted Rampion, the project's geologist, argues against the plan: he says decades of underground nuclear tests have already weakened the deeper rock, and that the explosion could open a crack in the crust. The device is used, and a crack opens and runs along a fault line.
