Plot summary
Dennis Barlow, an Englishman who hopes to be a poet, wins an airline ticket and flies to Los Angeles to see his uncle, Sir Francis Hinsley. Dennis has to arrange his uncle's funeral. Sir Ambrose Abercrombie, an English expatriate of standing, talks him into spending most of his uncle's estate on a burial at Whispering Glades, a cemetery and mortuary. There Dennis becomes drawn to Aimee Thanatogenos, a cosmetician named, she says, after Aimee Semple McPherson. The mortuary's chief embalmer, Mr. Joyboy, is drawn to her too. Aimee idolizes the owner, Reverend Wilbur Glenworthy.

- Evelyn Waugh's novel The Loved One, the film's source, grew out of a 1947 Hollywood trip: MGM offered him a six-figure sum for Brideshead Revisited though none of its bosses had read it, and the deal collapsed when Waugh demanded veto rights. He was inspired by the funeral industry and wrote about Forest Lawn cemetery and its founder, Dr. Hubert Eaton.
- The film's Whispering Glades cemetery was inspired by the real Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale; the exterior and interior scenes set at the facility were shot mostly at Greystone Mansion.
