Plot summary
Canadian pilot Ted Stryker led a Royal Air Force squadron in the Second World War, and a decision he made in those closing days killed six of his men. He has blamed himself ever since and will not fly. In Winnipeg he moves through jobs and his marriage is in trouble. His wife Ellen has taken their son Joey and is leaving for Vancouver, so Stryker hurries to Winnipeg Airport and boards Cross-Canada Air Lines Flight 714 to ask for one last chance. She tells him she no longer respects him and cannot love him. Stewardess Janet Turner serves the meal, lamb chops or grilled halibut. When passengers and the co-pilot fall sick, a doctor aboard finds the fish is the cause, and the pilot, seriously ill, switches on the autopilot.
