Plot summary
Columbia Airlines Flight 409, a red-eye Boeing 747, is bound from Washington Dulles to Los Angeles. Among the passengers are Janice Abbott, a teenage girl traveling on a stretcher for a kidney transplant, two nuns, Sister Beatrice and Sister Ruth, and Joe Patroni's wife Helen and their son. Scott Freeman, a businessman late for a sales meeting in Boise, Idaho, flies his own Beechcraft Baron. An occluded front shuts down visibility along the West Coast, and both aircraft are diverted to Salt Lake City, where the jumbo is cleared to land first. A heart attack sends Freeman's plane into the airliner's approach path, and the collision takes the flight crew out of action. Head flight attendant Nancy Pryor radios Salt Lake control that no one left on board can fly the plane.

- Airplane!'s creators Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker wanted Helen Reddy to play a similar nun character, but facing a potential copyright infringement lawsuit from Universal Pictures they cast Maureen McGovern instead and retitled their film Flying High for its international release.
- The production rented a real Boeing 747-123 from American Airlines while it was temporarily out of passenger service; the plane later served as a UPS freighter for over 20 years before being scrapped in 2011.
- Helen Reddy performs a solo acoustic version of her own song "Best Friend," originally from her 1971 debut album, in the film; she wrote it with Ray Burton, who also co-wrote her hit "I Am Woman."
