Plot summary
In 1875, renegades of the Comanche nation raid a peaceful village near Durango, Mexico, and carry off captives, among them Margarita, a Spanish aristocrat's daughter. They cross into United States territory to escape the Mexican Army. Jim Read, a scout, is given the task of looking into the raid, of easing the hostility that divides the Mexicans and the Comanche, and of opening talks with the chief, Quanah. Mexico has stopped paying bounties for Comanche scalps, yet the Americans ignore that arrangement, and scalp hunting still pays. Searching for Quanah, Read and his companion Puffer come upon Art Downey, a scalp hunter posing as a buffalo hunter, shooting and wounding a Comanche warrior; the two drive Downey off and promise to take the wounded man to the chief. Read also comes across Margarita, who fled the raiders.
