Biography

Gene Tierney was an American actress who became a leading lady during Hollywood's Golden Age, beginning her career in New York theater. Born in Brooklyn, she studied acting at a Greenwich Village studio and appeared on Broadway in The Male Animal, which led to a contract with 20th Century Fox. She made her film debut in The Return of Frank James (1940) and went on to star in Heaven Can Wait (1943), the film noir Laura (1944), and Leave Her to Heaven (1945), for which she received an Academy Award nomination as Best Actress. Her other Fox films included The Razor's Edge (1946), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Whirlpool and Night and the City (1950), and The Egyptian (1954). After working in television and stepping away from the screen, she returned in Advise and Consent (1962) and Toys in the Attic (1963). In 1986 she received the Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

    At a small acting studio in New York's Greenwich Village, Tierney trained under Benno Schneider, a Broadway actor and director, and went on to become a protegee of George Abbott, a Broadway producer and director.

    Tierney attended Brillantmont International School in Lausanne, Switzerland, for two years, and it was there that she learned to speak fluent French.

  3. A first

    Tierney was honored with Gregory Peck as the first recipients of the Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival in 1986.
