Mark Dixon is a New York police detective, the son of a criminal, and he wants his own record to read differently. Complaints about his rough handling of suspects have piled up, and Inspector Nicholas Foley demotes him, pointing to Lt. Thomas as the better example. At the same time, gangster Tommy Scalise is running an illegal dice game. Ken Paine brings the wealthy Texan Ted Morrison to the table, and Morgan Taylor comes with him. Morgan realizes Paine is using her to draw Morrison in, and when she tries to leave he strikes her; Morrison steps in and is knocked out. Police arrive to find that Morrison has been stabbed. - Lee J. Cobb was assigned the role of cab driver Jiggs Taylor but refused it, and Twentieth Century-Fox suspended him in December 1949. Cobb denied reports he turned it down because it was a taxi driver part and would not disclose his real reason; Tom Tully replaced him the next month.
