Plot summary
A dance at the Pearl Harbor Officers' Club on the night of December 6, 1941, brings together the officers and their wives. Liz Eddington, whose husband Paul is at sea, arrives with an Army Air Corps major. Lieutenant Mac McConnel and his wife Beverly watch her draw the room's attention. The next morning Captain Rockwell Torrey finds his executive officer, Paul Eddington, has overslept, and warns him to pull himself together. In port, Mac reads a dispatch from a destroyer that depth-charged an unidentified submarine too close to Pearl. Torrey's lookout sights formations of planes over Oahu, and he orders general quarters. The Japanese attack begins, and the ships that escape the harbor are ordered to group with Torrey's cruiser and seek out the enemy.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about In Harm's Way (1965)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- John Wayne's low-key performance was thought to be down to serious illness: he had lung cancer while the film was made. He was diagnosed shortly after filming ended in September 1964 and a month later had his entire left lung and two ribs removed.
SPOILER
Mayes wanted John Wayne's character to die at the end while the son lived, but Otto Preminger felt that audiences would not accept John Wayne dying.- The reference early on to the picket destroyer Ward depth-charging a submarine near Pearl Harbor is real: the target has since been established as a Japanese two-man mini-submarine, an incident also used in Tora! Tora! Tora!. The Ward was sunk by kamikaze action in December 1944.
- Only one World War II-vintage heavy cruiser still kept most of her wartime configuration, so she stood in for a couple of unnamed cruisers, and every destroyer used had to have its 1960s antisubmarine warfare gear covered over with fake gun mounts or deck houses.
