Adele Jergens
Biography
Adele Jergens was a Brooklyn-born American actress who started as a dancer, moving from ballet to burlesque. She danced in the Brooklyn Fox Theatre's chorus and in the 1936 Ziegfeld Follies, then modeled for the John Robert Powers agency from 1938. At the 1939 New York World's Fair she was named Miss World's Fairest, and she later worked briefly as a Rockette and was called New York City's number-one showgirl. After serving as Gypsy Rose Lee's understudy in the 1942 Broadway production Star and Garter, she signed with Columbia Pictures in 1944. Her early screen roles were often floozies or burlesque dancers, as in Down to Earth (1947) and The Dark Past (1948). In Ladies of the Chorus (1948) she was cast as Marilyn Monroe's mother, had a part in The Cobweb (1955), and appeared in Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man (1951). She also appeared as Glamourpuss Carol Curtis on the radio program Stand By for Crime.
