Plot summary

Marshal Johnny Reno is crossing the desert toward Stone Junction on personal business when the Conners brothers, believing he is tracking them, open fire from ambush. Reno wounds Joe Conners and kills his brother Ed, then takes Joe into custody and rides for town with the body. A posse from Stone Junction and warriors under Chief Little Bear also want the prisoner, and Reno refuses to surrender him, promising the chief he will seek justice. In Stone Junction, Mayor Jess Yates demands that Reno turn Conners over, while Sheriff Hodges says he will not put the prisoner in his jail. Reno forces Hodges to lock Conners up, and a hostile crowd, including Yates's daughter, tries to shoot the prisoner in the street. Reno asks about Nona Williams, who now runs the saloon, and finds Yates there instead.
