Big break
Martin Campbell was directing The Mask of Zorro for Amblin Entertainment, Steven Spielberg's production company, when Spielberg recommended Catherine Zeta-Jones, whom he had noticed in Titanic. Campbell chose her as the leading lady over his original pick, Izabella Scorupco.
First role
Zeta-Jones was the second understudy for the lead in a 1987 West End production of 42nd Street, and when the star and first understudy were both unavailable, she went on as Peggy Sawyer and kept the part for two years.
Getting ready for a role
Zeta-Jones based her Chicago character Velma Kelly's look and mannerisms on actress Louise Brooks and conveyed the character's flamboyance and desperation through small looks and nuances.
A first
In 2009, Zeta-Jones went back to the stage in a revival of A Little Night Music, the Stephen Sondheim musical. That production was her Broadway debut.
