Plot summary
In 1850 California votes on joining the United States, and Zorro foils a plot to steal the ballots. Alejandro de la Vega, the man behind the mask, refuses to stop riding as Zorro once the election is over, and his marriage to Elena frays until he moves out. Elena divorces him and takes up with Count Armand, a French vineyard owner she knew in Spain. Their son Joaquin, who does not know his father's secret, gets into trouble at school. Three months on, Alejandro finds the people have drifted far from Zorro. Father Felipe takes Joaquin to a party at Armand's vineyard, where Alejandro sees Elena with Armand, causes a scene and leaves.

- A crossover film, Django/Zorro, based on Quentin Tarantino's comic book series, was set up in June 2019 with Jerrod Carmichael co-writing. Carmichael told GQ in 2022 that it had been canceled, and in April 2026 it reentered development with Brian Helgeland writing the screenplay.
- The film opened at number two in the United States with $16.3 million and at number one in 34 international territories with a combined $28.5 million, including $6 million in France, for a worldwide opening weekend of $44.8 million.
- Though the story takes place in San Mateo County, California, the film was shot in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, with second-unit photography carried out as far away as Wellington, New Zealand.
