Plot summary
Kate Armstrong holds the top spot at 22 Bleecker Street, a West Village restaurant in Manhattan, and runs the kitchen at a pace that keeps her staff on edge. Its owner, Paula, sends her to psychotherapy and admits she is tempted to fire her. A car crash kills Kate's sister Christine as she drives to visit her, and Christine's nine-year-old daughter, Zoe, comes to live with Kate. Paula then adds a sous chef without asking: Nick Palmer, a talent who could run a kitchen of his own but wants to work under Kate. He cooks to opera and makes the staff laugh, and Zoe warms to him while Kate does not trust him.
