Plot summary
Drew Boley works as a barback at the Bourbon Room, a club on the Sunset Strip, and dreams of fronting a rock band. In 1987, Sherrie Christian arrives from Oklahoma hoping to sing; a thief takes her suitcase of records outside the club, and Drew gets her hired as a waitress. The owner, Dennis Dupree, and his assistant Lonny Barnett owe back taxes and are counting on a farewell show by Stacee Jaxx, the unreliable frontman of Arsenal, whose career began there. Patricia Whitmore, the mayor's wife, campaigns against rock music on the Strip. Drew, who has stage fright, and Sherrie grow close as he writes a song and she urges him on.

- Tom Cruise sang five hours a day to become the rock star Stacee Jaxx, and director Adam Shankman says he knew Cruise had it the first time he heard him in a voice lesson; every actor in the film sings their own vocals.
- Anne Hathaway and Amy Adams both turned down the Rolling Stone reporter Constance Sack before Malin Akerman took the role and completed the cast in May 2011.
- The scenes at the Hollywood Sign were not shot in California at all: the production used Monarch Hill Renewable Energy Park in Pompano Beach, Florida, and began filming in a small Fort Lauderdale music venue, Revolution Live.
- To recreate the Sunset Strip of the late 1980s the crew dressed six whole blocks of N.W. 14th Street in downtown Miami, rebuilding the Whisky a Go Go, Frederick's of Hollywood, Tower Records and the Angelyne billboard.
- Alec Baldwin, who plays club owner Dennis Dupree, asked New Line Cinema studio head Toby Emmerich to replace him in the part shortly before production began, and afterwards called the finished film a complete disaster.
