Plot summary

Thirteen years after his mother died, Harry Houdini spends his tour of Britain in 1926 exposing people who claim paranormal abilities. He promises $10,000 to anyone who can repeat his mother's dying words, which he keeps sealed in an envelope. In Edinburgh, Mary McGarvie and her teenage daughter Benji put on a music hall psychic show: Benji collects facts about the audience so that Mary can pretend to speak for their dead relatives. Hearing about the prize when Houdini's tour reaches Edinburgh, Mary decides they can work their trick on him, which means getting near him and learning about his life. His manager Sugarman stands in the way, and Mary and Benji have to find a way past him.
